There’s something about Yes Mam; it just feels like stepping into that dreamy and confusing time of one’s youth. Not just a story-it’s a feeling you recognize within. Standing at the center is Miss Leela as played by Kamalika Chanda. She does not seem to be the typical teacher who gives lessons and walks away. A stillness of strength marks her; indeed, she seems to possess a quiet confidence that makes one wonder what is really happening beneath that calm surface. Kamalika plays her with such nuances-you believe every glance and every pause without a big scene.
That is Payal, who Bharti Jha transforms into a living character. To watch her is akin to remembering what it felt like to live in a haze of curiosity without being certain. She does have admiration and confusion when it comes to Miss Leela, and this can be seen in the way Bharti carries her-sometimes shy, sometimes feeling, always real. She’s not perfect, she’s just there.

Nishi, the character played by Alendra Bell, is a quieter but equally strong character. She is the girl who gazes at all the happenings with a certain quiet intensity, as if she holds her own secrets. Alendra gives her this gentle, steady presence that grounds the story in a way that you wouldn’t have expected.
Farhaan Ansari is Nikhil, Vinney Singh is Tarun, and the two youth-packed boys energize the place around them and flick the effects up. Then adds the calm and highly respected principal accentuated with Dev Dehman, who ensures that all does not tip too far. Afaq Usmani seems to add balance as well as realism into the smaller role.
This makes this ensemble beautiful, for they do not just perform but live their characters. It doesn’t feel like watching actors; rather, it feels like peeking at real people carrying all their raw, messy emotions combined with quiet moments that stay with you long after the screen fades to black.
