Shreya Ghoshal is a favourite and very influential playback singer in the present time of Indian music. Born with a unique voice that brings together traditional accuracy with current emotion, her artistic development from a child prodigy to a global icon is proof of great dedication and musical genius. Early Life and Foundation in Music
Born on March 12, 1984, in Murshidabad, West Bengal, Shreya Ghoshal grew up in a cultured setting. She was born to parents Bishwajit Ghoshal, who was an engineer at the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, and Sarmistha Ghoshal, who has a master’s degree in literature. At the age of four, it was apparent that Shreya had a musical inclination that ran in the family, and they did what they could to foster it. Her mother would be by her side with the tanpura.
At the age of six, Shreya began with formal training in classical music. Her family later moved to Mumbai when her father’s transfer took them to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. In Mumbai, she expanded her musical studies training under the late Kalyanji Bhai and the late Mukta Bhide, which in turn gave her the base that is very strong in the field of Hindustani classical music.
The Breakthrough on National Television
Shreya’s break came through the national media. In 1995, after winning the All India Light Vocal Music Competition, which was put on by the Sangam Kala Group, she got a chance to be a part of Zee TV’s popular musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa). At the age of 16, which is very young, her pure voice, which was like no other, won over the judges and the audience, which in turn saw her win the Children’s Special episode in 1996 and also the 2000th mega episode in 1999. It was at these performances that filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali saw her talent, which in turn introduced her to Bollywood.

Rise to Global Superstardom
In her great debut as a Bollywood playback singer, which came out in 2002, Shreya did voice for five tracks in Bhansali’s magnum opus Devdas, which included the iconic songs “Silsila Ye Chahat Ka” and “Dola Re Dola”, and for which she won her first National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
In that historic debut, which marked the beginning of her career, she took off. She became the primary voice for India’s best composers, which include A.R. Rahman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Pritam. Known for the great versatility she has delivered hit after hit, which range from the soulful tunes of “Piyu Bole” and “Agar Tum Mil Jao” to the complex classical pieces of “Mere Dholna”. Personal Milestones and Legacy
In terms of her music, which is outstanding, Shreya also has a very full personal life. In 2015 in February she tied the knot with her childhood friend and partner, Shiladitya Mukhopadhyay, in a traditional Bengali wedding. The couple had their son Devyaan Mukhopadhyaya in May 2021.
With many National and International awards, including being the first Indian singer to place a wax statue at Madame Tussauds, Shreya Ghoshal goes on to inspire as a constant source of inspiration for the upcoming vocalists all over the world, and is a priceless gem of Indian music.
